First time Fiona Apple poster, long time Fiona Apple fan.

I can’t really articulate why I’m so drawn to her music. True, I’m into a lot of alt chick rock (Fiest, Alanis Morrisette to name a few) but Fiona is something else.

Her melodies are beautiful, but after you listen to the songs a few times because you (almost selfishly?) like the way they sound, all of the sudden you start to catch snippets of lyrics and once you flip the switch to listen to the words, not the music, it’s a totally different and incredible experience.

NY Mag just posted a rather lengthy piece about Fiona Apple, which is amazing because she’s not super into press or publicity but here’s what I learned from Fiona Apple today.

  • wacky kids who do wacky things turn out to be geniuses. It’s the kids where creativity and wackadoo behavior are encouraged who have the cognitive skills to express themselves
  • mirror neurosis is truly fascinating and in a weird way, a very Zen like and unselfish way to live.
  • children who go to school with nuns always turn out to be famous
  • she simultaneously has a life we all want and a life we’re all terrified of and pity to a certain extent. On the way hand - she smokes pot, makes music, takes classes, lives in a bungalow in LA and doesn’t respond to emails, all the while sending text messages containing whatever has come into her brain. On the other hand - she’s traumatized from a childhood rape, she has brutal OCD, she has constant insomnia and, to be gentle, seems to struggle socially.

If you do anything today, listen to the first single off Fiona’s soon to be released next album. If you do two things, take half an hour, grab a latte and read this great article from New York Magazine.
